Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

3. The DoorsThe Doors

It was the first thing I’d heard by a band where the organ was the lead instrument, pushed up front and centred with the voice, and I loved [Ray Manzarek’s] Latin American style. I was 14, so to hear that alongside Jim Morrison’s voice – he’s doing this Frank Sinatra thing but he’s not an old timer, he’s wearing leather but he’s really over the top – it was odd. If you already knew The Doors, you probably just accepted it, but I was hearing this in 1987. Nobody was talking about The Doors, nobody gave a fuck. I heard these songs at face value, and I was blown away by how bizarre it was, this old-time swing guy with this distorted organ and a rock band. I was into it.
