12. Andrew Lloyd Webber And Tim RiceJesus Christ Superstar
I didn’t know that it was also a musical, I thought it was just this radio play, like the War Of The Worlds Jeff Wayne album. So that’s how I approached it, and it’s a great experience as a radio play with live music. Even though it’s one of the most well-known stories in the world, it’s presented in the here and now, the last seven days of this guy told as if they don’t know what’s going to happen at the end, like it’s just about a student who’s getting paranoid about the attention his mate’s getting. That was what attracted me, along with the music itself which is extraordinary because of The Grease Band, this really accomplished young rhythm section. I was involved with a deluxe edition and I spoke to everyone who was involved in it, including Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Weber and [Judas performer] Murray Head, and they were all saying that the basis of it all was The Grease Band, how tight and how interesting they were. If it had been a pit orchestra that had done the music, I wouldn’t be interested in it. It was because it was dirty sounding, these guitars that sounded like they were placed with cheap amps.
