Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

Various Artists – Surrealism Reviewed

How would I describe this to a novice? Basically, I’d recommend anything on LTM Recordings. They’re a fantastic label and they put out loads of Factory and Les Disques Du Crepuscule stuff and James [Nice] who runs it has got immaculate taste. I was talking to him about what he had coming out and he recommended this to me.

I remember some of the early William Burroughs recordings we used to listen to and it’s lovely to have some spoken word stuff. We’re talking about doing this post-theoretical thing with [social and political philosopher] Toni Negri as a similar thing but with new theorists. We’d have them reading their work. There’s a woman Julia Kristeva who did a book called Intimate Revolt and a lot of this new theory is very, very poetic and I love to hear these people reading stuff.

We’re talking about talking books and people wanting to listen to this stuff in their cars. There are radio stations around Europe who have really cool broadcasts. For me, my records are like little radio plays.

Selected in other Baker’s Dozens: Lord Spikeheart, Tom Ravenscroft
