Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

Pearls Before Swine – Balaklava

This Tom Rapp guy is quite an interesting character. I don’t know how I found this… but I wouldn’t have been interested in psych folk when I bought this album. I think I got interested in Tom Rapp through Michael McClure and some of the stuff related to City Lights [SF Beat book shop]. There used to be this bookshop in London called Compendium and they had this little tiny record section at the back where I heard him. He’s a poet and I think he’s fantastic.

Has he made an impact on me as an artist? I don’t see myself as an artist but Devendra Banhart who I really love keeps Tom Rapp’s tradition going. Devendra’s really got it in his blood.

Selected in other Baker’s Dozens: Lord Spikeheart, Tom Ravenscroft
