My God, I loved Genesis. I saw them around the same time I saw Bowie at the Hard Rock Cafe. Those were the first two gigs I went to. Not bad, really. I loved Peter Gabriel’s theatrical approach and Phil Collins’ drumming – and I know this is deeply unfashionable to say, but I don’t care, he’s still one of my top five drummers of all time. And then there was that big mellotron on ‘Watcher of the Skies’, which is basically Lord Of The Rings set to music. I still try and drum along to that at home, try to get it right, but usually get it wrong. It’s weirdly English music, though, however fantastical it gets. That includes ‘Supper’s Ready’ on side two, which is this apocalyptic 23-minute 9/8…whatever-it-is. It sounds so exciting to me, even now. And yes, I am 61.
