Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

3. Nina SimoneSings The Blues

This is a record that I’ve always loved, a desert island record. I got into Nina Simone through Point of No Return, the Bridget Fonda movie in the 90s. We had no internet, there was no way to just go onto Spotify and just hear stuff! There’s a few songs on that record, ‘My Man’s Gone Now’, ‘Since I Fell For You!’… I could list a zillion Nina Simone songs, but most of the Nina Simone songs I like the best are on that record. I’m not often a fan of big production on records, I like the fact it’s mostly her piano and her voice, it’s not overwhelming, it’s extracted essence of Nina.
