Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

8. Harold Budd & John FoxxTranslucence / Drift Music

I listen to this record all the time. It’s a double LP and I’ve listened to both parts of it so much. This came into my life when I was around 23 or so, and eight years on, I’m still listening to those records on a regular basis. I’m a fan of any Harold Budd record basically. I’m infinitely grateful to him for all the music he’s made. It’s just beautiful music. All of those kinds of producers – people like Harold Budd, Brian Eno, Laurie Spiegel, Morty Feldman, Terry Riley and Robert Ashley – were all very important to me, both with my music and my state of mind. I always go back to this kind of music at night particularly. I have a lot of trouble sleeping. I have chronic insomnia so I have to watch myself. I listen to quiet music to help me wind down at the end of my day.
