Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

13. Royal TruxCats & Dogs

This one I discovered when I was 17 or 18. I was a big fan of bands like Sonic Youth and Velvet Underground at that time, but most of all, Royal Trux. I’m still a huge fan and got to see them at Primavera two years ago which was really special because I never got to see them live originally. They broke up around the time I got into them, so that show was one of my favourite ever. I just wanted to listen to it over and over again when I first heard it. I like how badass it is and how they often sing at the same time so people always confuse their voices. Jennifer Herrema has a really low and harsh voice and Neil Hagerty sings quite high notes. Neil Hagerty was my favourite guitar player. He’s amazing, he has so much soul and feeling in what he does. I love how distorted it all is and how weird it is. Even though it’s harsh, it’s not dark music to me. I find it very contemplative.
