Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

8. Hugh HoweySilo

I’m not super deep into sci-fi. I’ve never read Dune. But I guess I am a fan. I first got into sci-fi through an old friend about fourteen years ago, when I was working in bars. We were colleagues and had shifts together and became very close friends. He got me into Philip K. Dick and Aldous Huxley.

Silo is like candy. It’s like an action movie, it’s a page-turner. I bought it as a present for my husband two Christmases ago and when he finished it, I read it. I think I liked it more than him. I watched one episode [of the Apple TV adaptation] on a plane. It’s not as good as the book. I would watch another one if I’m bored, but I’m more inclined to reading. I don’t binge. I read. But that doesn’t make me a better person, at all. I just try to stay away from screens at night because I have a hard time falling asleep.
