Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

9. Haruki MurakamiKilling Commendatore

I read it in French. It’s about a painter who’s struggling. He’s living through a break-up slash potential divorce, and he’s struggling with his own work. He goes to a small town in the mountains and a bunch of stuff happens to him. Like all Murakami’s books, it’s very dreamy and surreal, but at the same time very real. It’s not sci-fi or fantasy. It’s always close to fantasy, but it isn’t. It’s very specific to him. It’s his own universe, which is so strong.
