12. Son HouseJohn The Revelator

I’ve actually sung this song once, on one of [American producer] Hal Willner’s shows. It is a brilliant song. Son House does it best out of any version I’ve ever heard. You have to dig deep to sing it, and you have to have wells of empathy and the ability to understand it, if possible. I guess pain is what I’m interested in. It makes us authentic as human beings. What helps me in that sense is reading biographies. I’ve read several wonderful books about Duke Ellington, which were riveting. You really see what their lives were like.
