Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

9. The BandThe Band

I thought The Last Waltz was one of the best music films ever, and so funny, with Van Morrison in his pink suit. Would I move to America? No, I wouldn’t be very happy there, I don’t think. I don’t want to go and live in Nashville or Austin just because I like some of the music. I’m not that crazy. I’m European, I really am. I wouldn’t have had the chances I’ve had. I would never have had the chance to appear in a full theatre production with a ballet if I’d lived in Texas. I always put a bit of country into my work, though. I covered Dolly Parton’s ‘Down From Dover’ once, and we did a good job of it, but it’s a dream, this black and white world, it’s not a reality.

Selected in other Baker’s Dozens: John Robins, Marry Waterson, Yusuf/Cat Stevens, Lee Buford
