Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

4. Iggy PopKill City

I guess Kill City is a concept album too if only because Iggy was allowed to leave the mental hospital on the weekends to record the vocals. It’s just the most soulful and heartbreaking Iggy record and again the last record before he crashed into ridiculousness. Yes, he had some good records with Bowie, blah blah blah, but I think it’s the age thing, because a lot of people heard Lust For Life and The Idiot when they were in their teens, they’re a bit better regarded than they have a right to be. And of course everyone loves The Stooges, but Kill City shows something else, it’s really broken hearted and he’s never sung better. You can really hear the struggle, Of course I think the rage of the early Stooges is monumental, but Kill City is something else. I love the saxophone on this album. It’s just so romantic.
