Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

8. OceanoDepths

I discovered them because there was this friend of ours called Sam, he made a Facebook page called ‘Metal On Demand’. Forgive us, Lord – we used to pirate albums we requested from him in the group. He would pirate albums, and then we would meet in Nairobi town. We would give him like, $2 or $3. If it was $5, then he would give us the whole record. He ripped them off, torrented them, and then I had this CD player I got for my sister. I would walk around listening to metal in places I shouldn’t be listening to metal.

I loved Oceano; seeing a Black vocalist is always cool. Adam Warren’s vocals were so evil, so dark. He could do lows that go really low, that would get guttural like an animal. And his lyrics were so graphic, about the apocalypse and how things are going down. It is so comical how this graphic dark landscape was created with his words.

I also loved how they used to perform live. I would share their videos between our friends and everything. I love the image of seeing him performing; also, he’s Black, he’s a big guy, and his vocals are way out there.
