Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

8. REQOne

This is an album I just have to take with me. It was probably a big influence, although I don’t like to think about single influences like that. Req is for all intents and purposes a hiphop record, but it just feels like it doesn’t have a time. It feels like a document of something you’d send to someone to say ‘this is the kind of music that was happening’, and they’d say ‘it would be lovely if you could have been in there to hear this’, but this is actually it, the only one like it. And I’m not sure I can say that about the stuff that I’ve made.
