Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

7. Metal HeadsTerminator

One of my friends had some decks and he lived in a town outside Birmingham. We used to get the train up and I remember seeing this cover stuck on the wall. We would go to his room and smoke and he would play this, and Rufige Kru, Metal Heads, early Goldie stuff, 4 Hero. When I think back to that sound now, I think, yeah, it did something to me. It does something this sound and this track, when it drops and it gets all phased and weird.

When Goldie was working with Rob Playford there was some serious music being made. Goldie would go and draw, literally draw what he wanted to hear, and Rob was a really good producer and would make it. I’m still doing this now, for this recent project with the London Contemporary Orchestra, where I’ve used graphic scores. It’s the same thing! The link is a bit like looking at a Rorschach perhaps, but to me these things are connected.
