Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

9. RaekwonOnly Built For Cuban Linx

People think of the mid 90s for jungle and hiphop, and I think those things are very closely linked sonically; some of the drums they were sampling were the same drums. I think jungle is the UK’s hip hop, in the sound of it. Listen to ‘Snakestyle’ by Source Direct and listen to Wu Tang Clan, they’re really close. People say hip hop is this, or it’s that, but it’s not – it’s not static. You can give these things a title but that does not stop them moving, and hip hop now doesn’t sound anything like this album, this Raekwon album.
