Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

2. The Free DesignButterflies Are Free

It’s extremely difficult to find their albums. I have never seen an original, and I have been collecting since the 80s, going to record fairs and shops. They were from America and I am not sure if their records were ever released in the UK. You get all the original albums in this one little release, and again, you get a book. It’s hard to find out about the band, and I’m talking as someone who is not on the internet. I first heard about them in the early 90s. At that time I was into middle of the road music, my love of them came about through my love of that really. It was a group that we could never find, so it was exciting. They seemed like a Carpenters-type group with great song writing, and because they were siblings, their harmonies melded in a different way. If you want to get into The Free Design, this is the way to do it.
