Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

Some synths reveal a tell-tale pulsation. A lot of synths, especially in New Age music, have a synthetic, string-sounding, thin effect which I find a distracting annoyance. They go for a certain plushness which just doesn’t do it for me. I have played in orchestras with a violin and so have an ear for orchestral sound. There are certain players, Steve Roach is one and Rudy Adrian is another, who have a knack of plumbing the instrument and finding that full, sublime sound. It’s a case of finding the correct tunings, really going in and customising the machine if necessary.
