Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

10. Simon & GarfunkelBookends

Yes, I can understand people thinking this is the best album they did together. “The Boxer”, “Old Friends” . . . I listened to it a lot at the time. One of my own favourites – it was exciting in that it matched my own mood, and that of America at the time, especially on the song “America” – the hopefulness, the turbulence, the happiness, the sadness. Paul Simon seems to me to be the poet, the poet laureate, you might say, of the times the country was going through when that album came out, critical times.

Selected in other Baker’s Dozens: Vince Clarke
