5. Kode9Diggin In The Carts Remixes

You of course worked very heavily on this project, designing the cover and getting involved in the visuals on the live tour which saw Kode9 re-interpreting the old Japanese video game soundtracks live.

I really navigated the visual content from [animator] Kōji Morimoto, so I was given access to five or six of his animations like Robot Carnival. I just spent ages cutting these visuals up into little bits to form libraries of clips that would go with the music. Also, he sent me quite a lot of illustrations which I then turned into my own 3D scenes that were more graphic-based to mix up with the anime footage. I worked on the remix EP using some of those graphics as well to create this kind of sci-fi vibe inspired by NeoTokyo.

It’s the drum programming on this record that really gets me. I always find it really interesting, that footwork and [Roland TR-]808-based style. It really sunk into my head over the course of the shows we were doing [on the Diggin In The Carts tour]. Those sounds just took over my imagination, so working on the album, I just wanted to make more stuff with 808s and combine that with simple, synth-based melodies.
