What draws you to this particular release then over, say, the more widely-available records like Geodaddi and Music Has The Right To Children?
The production quality has this element that’s actually just quite… crap, compared to the others. They’re little sketches and loose ideas, but there are some absolutely amazing tracks in there. They’re quite basic, but just really raw. ‘David Came To Mahana’im’, the acid one, is a favourite. It’s just a rolling synth – probably a [Roland SH-]101 – and a breakbeat, and I’ve always daydreamed about what it would sound like if Boards Of Canada made rave music. That’s probably the closest you’ll get, and I always try to think about that when I’m trying to come up with ideas. What would it sound like if they made a hardcore rave tune? Across a lot of their old stuff, there were quite a lot of breakbeats and hardcore sounds. They have quite a simple approach to melody – a lot of it can get in your head and be whistled. That’s something that I’ve tried to do when it comes to writing melodies. It has to be simple.
