Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

12. The Disintegration Loops

This is my favourite of the loops. It just sounds like you’ve died [laughs]. It’s the most calming one, and one of the most relaxing pieces of music I’ve ever heard. It gets this simultaneously happy and sad vibe across. There’s a hauntological quality to it, like you’ve been here before. I think it’s so successful because it’s quite multi-dimensional even though it’s the same loop that rolls out for 40 minutes and slowly rots. It dies, I suppose, in the end, if you think about it like that. I like how ambient music like this, by design, is quite passive and isn’t forceful. You can stick it on while you’re working, and it doesn’t intrude too much but it also stimulates you. It’s healing too, it’s like medicine for me.
