10. GasNah Und Fern
This compiles a bunch of different Gas records. Did you find it difficult whittling it down to just one singular record?
Yeah, this one has the dub techno side and the ambient take on it. It sounds quite similar to me to how The Caretaker processes old swing and jazz records, and ballroom stuff. This, to me, sounds like old German classical music being processed through loads of dub delay and turned into techno. It has quite a romantic, filmic quality to it. It could soundtrack a Herzog movie. ‘Earthly Delights’ on my new record was definitely a little nod to old Gas and also to my friend Axel [Willner], who makes music as The Field.
I first heard Gas’ music really early, when I was buying records as a teenager from [record shop] 23rd Precinct in Glasgow. I was buying a lot of Studio 1 [another alias of Wolfgang Voigt’s] stuff from there. Pretty much the first techno I got into were those records and the [Voigt-founded label] Profan stuff, so there was lots of low-end and hi-hats, and it was quite stripped-back. I think I was drawn to the artwork and the colours.
