Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

12. Serge GainsbourgHistoire de Melody Nelson

Serge – well, it had to be France that produced Serge. Being a big Francophile, I see the genius of Serge; he’s not a great singer but has a compelling purpose to his voice, like Mark Stewart from The Pop Group. There’s nothing pretty in their voices, but I like what they’re saying – the underlying tone is authentic and real, and fearless in its expression.

Also, the bass lines turn me on. This has great vision, and creates an amazing atmosphere that teleports me instantly to another imaginary time and place.

I did a DJ set in Dublin last year, and the place was packed with kids. When I put this on, the place erupted… they are so knowing, this young generation!

Selected in other Baker’s Dozens: Baxter Dury, Laibach
