All these records are things that I think about fondly but I don’t really listen to… which is fine… I probably will again. What was perfect about this major label record is that Cope was talking about aliens, UFOs, stone circles and freaking out in a conversational and dedicated way. The songs had hooks and he was obviously into Krautrock. I played this record for Oneida about three times in the van before they liked it, but then after they decided it was good we started covering ‘Going Upwards at 45 Degrees’. I sang it.
I got an email from Julian Cope once – subject: "YOU LOT ON WFMU" – he had heard an Oneida live set on the listener sponsored radio station WFMU. I responded telling him that he was one of my heroes. He never replied – but that’s fine. No judgement. I also saw Julian Cope perform in Oxford in 1995…during the concert I was able to hold out a 7" single by my band Super Hussy while he was mid-song. He took it from me and looked at it for a second and put it down. Not sure if he took it home or what.
