Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

9. Andrew CyrilleGood to Go A Tribute To Bu

This is a record featuring Cecil Taylor’s drummer as a leader. It’s on Soul Note – a now dormant Italian jazz label where I worked for a week on 1997. Bu here refers to Art Blakey – the diminutive powerhouse drummer on a lot of classic early bop records. This particular album is powerful and lean, with great compositions and amazing playing by all involved. I’m hoping to take some lessons from him soon.
