Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

2. Barbara Streisand And Omar SharifFunny Girl: Original Sound Track Recording

For as long as I remember, I’ve always watched music instead of listening to it. When I was growing up, I was brought up by my gran, who would bring in tapes for me to watch. I remember sitting in the front room – where I rarely sat with my gran – transfixed by how these people moved and performed on the little TV, and they’d get played until these tapes just fell apart.

Funny Girl was one such tape, which kept my soul alive when I younger and still fills me with absolute joy. It showed the beauty of performance the beauty of being able to display a talent you have. What I love about this type of music is that you know it’s a performance but there’s also truth to it. So it’s like losing myself without actually losing myself. Barbara Streisand was someone I could watch forever. How she would use her voice was an ability I wanted to be good at.
