I grew up listening to Broadway musicals, and that was his music to me. There was a lot of comfort in the musical, Broadway melodies that you get out of his stuff. I think this was one of his first albums, and I always go back to it because it reminds me that even if you make specific genres of music it can still reach different audiences. For me, I always knew I wanted to make the particular type of music I’m making now. But I had a voice that didn’t this genre in the music industry. People like Randy Newman managed to make their music their own, which was inspiring to me.
