Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

6. The For CarnationThe For Carnation

I was a very depressed teenager and I read about The For Carnation and it sounded like it would be a fit. I heard the first song and it was so glacial and minimalist. My blood pressure has never been great. It’s always been a little high, which makes sense if you’re an anxious person, but that song is so long it was hypnotic and I felt my blood pressure normalise, it made me feel so grounded and seen. I don’t really know what the lyrics are in this record. They’re pretty opaque. But it was just like a laser beam hit me and I listened to it obsessively for a number of years. The first song and the last song in particular, because they’re interesting mirror images of each other. They’re so long and still, but they’re not weepy. I don’t really know how this record sounds to anyone else because it just became fused with this period of my life.
