Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

5. Dirty ThreeWhatever You Love, You Are

I don’t know how to talk about Dirty Three, but I’m obsessed with their catalogue. It’s very hard for me to choose one record. This one I listen to a lot running, or walking alone. It’s such a personal thing. I feel like they saved my life. I don’t know how to talk about it. They have this way of saying everything with no words. It’s three people and there are times when the songs sound like an orchestra of people. They cover every emotion. They can be so tender and wistful, and at other times it sounds as if they’re opening the refrigerator and throwing everything out, and throwing all the pots and pans around in the kitchen. They just help me lose track of time. I love their longer pieces. As much as I love songwriters, there are some things a songwriter can’t do, and vice-versa. The same is true with instrumental music. There is something that Dirty Three can do that makes me feel like everything will be okay, because they go through every emotion, and then the record ends and nothing has exploded or detonated. It just takes you through everything you can feel as a person and then calmly resolves. It’s very transformative music. I wish I had seen them live. I don’t know how much they’re in America, but it’s a life goal to see them live, if they still play. I don’t know if they’re even still active.
