2. Fela KutiExpensive Shit
When I got to college, for the first time I was exposed to Fela Kuti. I was 18 and they played ‘Water No Get Enemy’ in class. There was so much rhythm. Polyrhythm upon polyrhythm. The drums and percussion, bass guitar, horns, the way he sings. It really opened my mind to this layering concept. If you hear it right, there are infinite possibilities. There’s so much going on but it had such a groove to it at the same time.
I remember being in this class and everyone was grooving so hard and I was hearing all the things that were happening. It really propelled me and got me into the idea of checking out different musical styles from around the world.
