I’m really drawn to ‘Patchwork’ and all three parts of ‘Appalachian Grove’. It’s hard to find language for these tracks though, because that’s not how my reactive brain works with listening to this music. It’s easy for me to find words to put behind my own creation, but harder for me when I’m listening to the work of others to describe my reaction to it beyond just simply liking it. Sometimes I don’t even know if I’ve figured out why exactly I like it.
Is that idea important to you even, or are you just happy to take in music on a more simple level of appreciating how it sounds?
I think it depends on the person. I tend to not analyse what I like and lean towards unpacking what I don’t like. I find a lot more curiosity in having a strong reaction of resistance to something, then I’ll ask myself ‘why don’t I like that?’ But if I like something, I tend to just enjoy it for what it is.
