Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

Are you a big Studio Ghibli fan?

I really enjoy the [Hayao] Miyazaki films in particular. I haven’t seen all of the others – I’ve seen The Tale of Princess Kaguya [by Isao Takahata] – but I’ve seen those Miyazaki films, and that’s partly because my husband, who is a filmmaker, is influenced by them too. I really love the melodies on this record. To not sound too dweeb-y, I’m just a really big fan of when melodies jump and do a major sixth interval as they do a lot on this soundtrack. I think those kinds of melodies naturally find their way into my music. I’ll just listen to music like this, and really like how it sounds. It goes into my subconscious and inevitably influences me.
