Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

10. CardiacsAll That Glitters Is A Maresnest VHS

In the early 90s we found this VHS live tape, where Cardiacs are playing a show in Salisbury. How they act on stage is full of small things that feel very funny and very dangerous at the same time. And that was a huge influence for us playing live. There were some weird things happening. After one song, the keyboard player and guitar player just shake hands… In another part, they turn around very, very fast. And sometimes they stand like sculptures. We watched it often. Whenever we had a weekend with people over drinking beer, when I woke up on a Sunday morning, I always found this VHS tape in my recorder, because in those last hours, I always showed it to someone. In Pori I knew many people who were huge fans of Cardiacs. Sometimes I think that Pori was one city in the world that was full of Cardiacs fans. I think it’s some of the best songwriting ever, and it’s still underground. Even for people in Britain, it’s not a very well-known band. It’s a secret thing, like a treasure in some way. Me and my wife went to see them in London, and I had a chance to meet them, and I was so nervous and so shy I couldn’t even speak.
