Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

2. John WilliamsEmpire Of The Sun (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

I saw the film in the theatre with my parents when I was a kid and it was pretty life-changing in a bunch of ways. I thought it was incredible and it’s still one of my favourite movies, and it still makes me cry every single time I watch it. I think Christian Bale’s performance in it, at that age, is incredible – I don’t even understand how that happened. It’s quite mind-blowing. From the moment the film opens, you’re hearing that Welsh lullaby ‘Suo Gan’, which became instantly my favourite piece of music and still is years later. I’ve included that song on every mixtape and playlist I can possibly fit it into. It’s very moving for me. I do associate it with the movie, too, of course, which was scored by John Williams, who is my favourite film composer. I would basically go be his coffee-runner or iron his whatevers. I would do anything to do anything for John Williams at this point.
