Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

11. Arthur RussellCalling Out Of Context

He’s a legend and a New York underground hero. I was introduced to his music about 11 years ago and I was like, what is this? Is this guy jamming on a cello? I fell in love with ‘A Little Lost’ [from Another Thought]. It made me cry and so I just went out and bought everything I could get my hands on. Then I had a couple of friends who were closely tied to that Wild Combination documentary that was made a couple of years ago, and I was really excited about that. I don’t know – I just love his music. That whole plan, which was to jam on a cello and to sing with this really incredible voice that really doesn’t sound like anyone else, was perfect and beautiful. Plus, he’d abandon that plan and make country-ish acoustic music and that was awesome, too. Oh, and now I’m gonna do disco-y shit! And that was awesome, too. He was just a magician. I’m not alone in my deep love and admiration for his work.

Selected in other Baker’s Dozens: Nite Jewel, Foals, Nik Colk Void
