Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

11. The OthersMonochrome Set

This is a record that isn’t a formative record but I got hip to it when someone turned me on to it. They’re Finnish and I kind of knew about them but not really. With this record they got together and recorded the songs they love. You have some Link Wray and The Troggs there and the sound they have there is very clean. There’s some dirty guitars and dirty organ but there’s a great space to the recording. It’s well produced, it sounds great and they do really beautiful versions of these songs. You hear someone say, “Oh, here’s a record of a bunch of Link Wray covers” and you think, "ah, I don’t wanna hear that!", but they do a really great job of the songs. They change things enough and they do their own version. They put a really nice stamp on these songs.
