Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

6. The Velvet UndergroundThe Velvet Underground & Nico

It’s a total cliché but it really was the first record that made me want to play rock & roll rather than straightforward pop. I’d have been about 17 or 18 at the time. They had an amazingly strong image and you can see and hear their influence everywhere. It really is the album that made me want to form a band; I know it’s what everyone says but it’s true!

Selected in other Baker’s Dozens: Mark Webber, Gang of Four, John Foxx, Echo & The Bunnymen, Morrissey
