Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

5. UltravoxHa! Ha! Ha!

The Ultravox I grew up with, the ‘Vienna’ one, I really wasn’t too interested in. They were alright, I think I just didn’t like Midge Ure very much, not as a person – he’s lovely – but as a performer. The John Foxx Ultravox took this idea of machine music and pushed it. They sound like a punk Roxy Music, which was always the idea I had for Menswear.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he was one on ‘my people’ – I claim all the best ones! Someone like him, who can get emotion across seemingly without having a personality, really interests me. I mean, at home I’ve got Daleks everywhere, and they’re not known for their personalities but I’m fascinated by them! But Foxx is a pioneer and electronic music owes him a lot. He’s a definite hero.
