Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

7. The Jock Strapo EnsembleRugby Songs Volume Two

I was encouraged to pick this collection of bawdy songs by my next door neighbour and sole agent Ken Worthington. I wasn’t so sure, and I’ve not even listened to it yet, but I will soon, encouraged by the presence of Fergal Sharkey on the far right. I used to like him when he was in the charts, and if Fergal’s on lead vocals or even just doing some harmonies it should prove a satisfying listen. But oo – I do wish someone would release an album of Table Tennis songs. That’s a woefully under exploited genre in my view. If and when it happens I have a perfect song for it called ‘Pingpong Pangs’. It goes like this: “Ping pong pangs, Ying and yang – the perfect game for two/ Playing ping-pong you can’t go wrong – it’s a pleasurable thing to do/ Tennis is for fools, there’s too many rules and you need bigger balls as well/ But ping-pong pangs, my ping-pong pangs are the pangs I long to quell!" But I shall insist on the singers being less scantily clad!
