Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

13. The BachelorsThe World Of The Bachelors

While it’s super to see the three Bachelors perched on rocks (are they at Froggat Edge near Hathersage? It looks like it!), it’s disturbing to note that none of them has the protection of a cagoule. There’s a good reason for this, of course – cagoules weren’t invented until long after this photo was taken. Still, wind-cheaters were surely around in 1970, the year of this record’s release, and The Bachelors really should have slipped them on over their smart shirts before the photo session. Or at least some thick pullovers, and where are their flasks and sandwich boxes? Silly boys, it can get very chilly out in the wilds of Derbyshire. Nothing chilly however about the amazing catalogue of hits on this LP – the choice that completes my baker’s dozen. They include ‘Phil The Fluter, ‘The Unicorn’ and my wife’s fave, ‘I Wouldn’t Trade You for the World’ “Wouldn’t you, love? That’s nice to know!”. They’re still going, you know – the Bachelors – after more than 60 years on the road. They’re playing Skegness again soon, Ken says. Oo, maybe I’ll pop out there with Mary. I fancy some sea air. Bye for now, and thanks for reading my Baker’s Dozen!
