Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

12. A Flock of Seagulls

I don’t mean to be nasty but I can’t think of any Flock Of Seagulls songs. It doesn’t mean they’re not good, it’s just that the singer’s hairstyle is so eye-catching that that’s all you can concentrate on. The first time I saw him on Top Of The Pops I backed away from the TV screen in fear. I’d never witnessed such an awful hairstyle before. But then I realised Mike Score’s hairstyle was fundamentally linked to that of my wife’s, and therefore he and A Flock Of Seagulls would always have a special place in my heart. Let me explain. My wife Mary’s hairdo has always been in the shape of a motorcycle helmet – I mean the old fashion kind like Wallace and Gromit have. I don’t mean a helmet with a visor – that would imply a floppy fringe, you see. But seeing Mike from A Flock of Seagulls made me realise that his hairdo was that very thing, just like a motorcycle helmet with a visor! It’s amazing, don’t you think? A Flock of Seagulls deserve to be in my Bakers Dozen for this reason alone, even though I can’t remember a single note of their music.
