Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

10. Marvin GayeWhat’s Going On

I knew the record when I was a kid, but really got into it in 1996. I was living in this drug warehouse and it was at that point in Britpop when everyone was putting out a second or third album and I was kinda looking in other directions because a lot of the bands I’d been listening to just weren’t bringing it anymore. And I was more into funk and soul and brought this at Tower Records at Market Street in San Fransisco and it was my constant soundtrack. I was so enamoured with this record that I carried the cassette around with me in the breast pocket of my leather jacket. My go to track is ‘What’s Happening Brother’ – the groove on that is insane. I love the song ‘Right On’, which is obviously extremely right on. If everybody in the world could live by that song we’d all be doing great. ‘Inner City Blues’ is my ultimate album ending track – it’s all under the umbrella of genius.
