Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

10. MonicaMiss Thang

Miss Thang actually ties in really well with what I just said earlier about jazz, because my bad kind of forced me to start taking jazz dance classes, which I hated. But my teacher was really cool. And she would use that Monica album as our warm-up. I was quite young, I think around the same age as like all these other records, like the SWV and Janet Jackson. So this dance teacher introduced me to Monica and then I remember going home and seeing the music video for ‘Don’t Take It Personal (Just One Of Dem Days)’ and realising how much I love Monica’s voice too. She kind of got me into R&B music. I hated the dance classes because I was just really awful but the one good part was I knew that I would be able to hear that Monica song.
