5. Geto BoysWe Can’t Be Stopped
The songs became embedded in my mind and kept me company on many levels… I had been living a street life for some years prior to the shelter and dope, guns, anger and money were all part of that equation and the purity of those songs made me feel alive and not alone. Shortly after leaving the homeless shelter, I moved in with my drug dealers Bang and Andre and would walk their kids to school through the projects where they were slinging crack for food and rent money… all I ever listened to was Geto Boys those days and we would sing all the way to the elementary school.
Hip-hop culture has been a big influence – it’s one of the main genres I grew up with… hip hop, funk and go-go music were the flavours of choice in Chocolate City, South East DC. Whenever we play live I always have one leg of my jeans over my boots and one leg inside in the boots as a homage to LL Cool J. I’ve been doing that for years. When it comes to modern hip hop, I like some and dislike some. I think a lot of the subject matter has become redundant and cannot be taken seriously. I’m bored of materialistic claims and stale topics.
