Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

2. FunkadelicOne Nation Under A Groove

Funkadelic’s One Nation Under A Groove came out the same year as Motor Booty Affair and became a fast favourite (but something about ‘Aqua Boogie’ and the crow/bird calls at the start of the song still occupies my mind to this day). Also, seeing Funkadelic years later with Eddie Hazel brought all the excitement of my childhood listening right back to the front of my mind. Those albums will never be gone from my head.

I don’t always want to dance when I hear them. It actually depends on what Funkadelic I’m listening to: One Nation Under A Groove tons; Maggot Brain not so much.

Other music I can dance to? Yes absolutely tons and tons… Cameo, Zapp, Rick James, The Gap Band, Chuck Brown, James Brown, Sly Stone, the list goes on.

Selected in other Baker’s Dozens: Lisa Stansfield
