Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

8. Vera LynnWe

This is of course used on the score of Dr. Strangelove, at the very end of the film. Stanley Kubrick uses it ironically as you see the mushroom cloud and nuclear bombs going off, ending the world as we know it. It’s just brilliant. And then we almost put it into [The Mountain]. The film was just now in competition at the Venice Film Festival. I learned the song on the piano and was singing it a lot. The film features Ty Sheridan, a wonderful young actor, Udo Kier, and Denis Lavant, who’s absolutely wonderful. It’s a dark, disturbing, poetical film, but we almost used that song. I love it so much.
