Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

7. Various ArtistsThe Love You Save: American Soul Music 1955-1972

I probably could have picked all of the albums in this series that Cairo has put out. With compilations like this, it’s like somebody else has done the hard work of putting the tracks together for you. I think there’s about eight of them in total, and they all run to double or triple albums. I believe they own a record shop in Portland, so it seems like the best job in the world – just to pick up the best records that come into the shop, and every record you don’t like you can just sell. I really like what they’ve put out. It’s very rare on any of the records where I’m thinking ‘what’s that doing on there?’ I just think they’ve got a way of putting these things together that make sense. It’s all infused with the same kind of sound that feels like it’s dropped out of the sky. A ‘how the hell did this get made?’ kind of thing. I can’t recommend them enough. I feel like I should be on their payroll because I talk about them so much.
