Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

6. Bettye SwannBettye Swan

With Bettye Swann, it’s just her voice. It’s another voice that sounds absolutely her own. This one just knocks me dead every time. There’s something about when people seem like they have put so little effort into producing this unique sound. Obviously that suggests that she’s not digging deep but it’s not that; it just feels like she can just put it out with so little expenditure on her part. It just fits. It’s hard talking about music isn’t it? But it just feels like it fills the air and it’s perfect. It might be an accent thing for me too because it’s hard not to go down to Memphis and fall in love with everybody. Because it just feels like they can sing in that voice.
